Oatka Creek Park • February 28

Long-tailed Duck. A common bird in an uncommon location! This bird belongs up on Lake Ontario.

Long-tailed Duck. Time for a bit of preening.

Long-tailed Duck. According to Cornell’s Birds of North America, these ducks may be deepest divers of the diving ducks, reaching depths of up to 200 feet!

Long-tailed Duck. So, this duck’s occurrence in a creek that is usually no more than hip to chest deep, at best, is quite a surprise!

Long-tailed Duck. But, even with all the evident ice in the water, Oatka Creek is one of the last remaining places where these ducks can get to the fish.
