Red-bellied Woodpecker. This is a juvenile. Note the barest hint of red on the front of its forehead.

Monarch

Monarch

Monarch. This butterfly has had a tough time of it. Note how a big bite has been taken out of its forewings, especially the right one. It lived to see another day, however!

Monarch caterpillar

Blue-fronted Dancer. This is a damselfly. Damselflies and dragonflies belong to the order Odonata ("toothed ones").

Eastern Phoebe

Eastern Phoebe

Monarch (female)

Monarch (male). The colors on this butterfly looked so fresh and new that I believe it to be fresh from the cocoon and drying out.

Monarch caterpillar. This was a tiny caterpillar that was smaller than my thumbnail. Third instar, perhaps. (Monarch caterpillars will go through four instars before pupating.)

Monarch caterpillar. Chowing down on the milkweed leaf!

Northern Pearly-eye

Song Sparrow. I believe this is a juvenile.

Eastern Phoebe. This is the second nest. The birds in the first nest that I have been following have now all fledged!

Eastern Cottontail. This was a young bunny. I was able to talk to it for a while so that it would stay for a picture or two.

Monarch caterpillar. Hurray! I finally found one of these caterpillars this year!

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Eastern Phoebe. Seems like today may be fledging day. Only three birds appear to be left in the nest. I saw what I think the fourth one flying around the lodge as I approached.

Mourning Cloak. This is the most colorful individual I've every seen of this species!
