Eastern Phoebe Nest. Eyes are opened for the first time today. I am beginning to suspect more and more that this is a Brown-headed Cowbird nestling.

Little Wood-Satyr

Mourning Warbler

Dame's Rocket. A nice variety.

Brown Thrashers. This is probably a nesting pair.

Blue Jay. As I was walking down off of Maple Hill, I glanced down in the middle of trail by my feet and did a double take: a fledgling Blue Jay was nestled in the grass!

Blue Jay. At first this young bird froze to hopefully avoid detection. However, it quickly realized it had been spotted anyway, so it started to hop to the side of the trail and into taller grass.

Blue Jay. Note that this young bird has not yet developed a long tail that is characteristic of Blue Jays. This bird is just days from the nest, if not newly fledged this very morning!

Blue Jay. It made quiet "ack" type of calls as it hopped into deeper cover. All the while I was waiting for a parent to show up. Moments later an adult Blue Jay came onto the scene with alarm calls. I quickly exited as I wanted nothing to do with an aggressive jay!

Red-winged Blackbird Nest. This nest was right at the water's edge and maybe a foot above the water. The female flew out of this nest as we entered the area.

Red-winged Blackbird Nest. This is a different nest. In fact, it was apparent that there was a loose colony of Red-winged Blackbird nests in the area.

Red-winged Blackbird. These birds were not happy with our proximity to their nests and voiced their displeasure frequently!

Yellow Warbler Nest. The dark area in the center of the picture is the nest. We saw the female fly out of the nest as we glided by.
