Red-breasted Merganser. Another new bird for the park list! This is a female. These birds are common along the Lake Ontario shore, but I have not had one on the creek before. Today there were three: two females and one male.

Red-breasted Merganser. This is the male. I just couldn't get a nice shot with his head above water. All the ducks were very skittish and I was having to sneak pictures from behind trees and such.

Red-breasted Merganser. Oh well, maybe I'll get a nice picture of him tomorrow if he is still around.

Serviceberry. This tree is one of the first, if not the first, tree to bloom in spring in the park. The buds are full and waiting for winter to break, as we all are!

Northern Shrike. I found my first ever Oatka Creek Park shrike today! It was along the field portion of Black Billed Cuckoo Trail. On reflection, this area is standard shrike hunting habitat.

Northern Shrike. This bird was in Black Creek Park and has been there since at least December, spending a balmy winter in Rochester!

Northern Shrike. This bird nests in the spruce forests of upper Canada, so it is well acclimated to cold weather.

Northern Shrike. This bird, believe or not, is a predator with a diet that consists of rodents and small birds. It is the size of a mockingbird. Note the obvious hook at the end of its bill for tearing flesh.

Northern Shrike. During winter this bird hunts from the top of tall shrubs, as it is doing here.
