Oatka Creek Park • May 19

Common Yellowthroat

Giant Swallowtail. Perhaps due to last summer's drought, this year has been a dismal year for butterflies. Their numbers are way down. In a season I will generally see a dozen of these large beauties. This may have been the only Giant I've seen this year.

Great Blue Heron

Great Blue Heron

Downy Woodpecker. Not a great shot, but that fresh hole is its nest! I was monitoring the nest daily until the heavy rains started causing the creek to overflow its banks and flood my access to the tree. By the time the creek had receded from flood stage a few days later, the nestlings had fledged. Oh well, maybe next year.

Spotted Sandpiper. All decked out in breeding plumage.

Pileated Woodpecker. This woodpecker was rooting around fallen logs looking for a meal.

Tree Swallow

Scarlet Tanager. Getting ready to launch!

Apple Blossoms. Harkening back to the days when the park was a collection of farms.
