Oatka Creek Park • April 1

Wood Duck. There is a small "pothole" swamp along the dirt road from the parking lot to the woods. The sounds of Wood Ducks have started to come from this area. One has to bushwhack a bit to get back to the area, so there is no sneaking up on these highly skittish birds. (Being prized game birds has caused them to become so elusive.) All the other Wood Ducks left the area as I approached, but this male stayed behind to keep an eye on me.

Wood Duck. Don't let the picture fool you. This duck is in the back of the pothole and virtually invisible to the naked eye due to distance and camouflage. Without a 50x camera you would never get this picture.
