Oatka Creek Park • August 8

Common Merganser. This young bird was unhappy with me noticing it, so it began swimming at quite a clip, as you can see from the wake. Also, notice how it is sitting in the water as low as it can.

Common Merganser. It would frequently tip its head under water like this as it swam along. Looking for food? Looking for a deep section for a diving escape?

Monarch. These butterflies are certainly in their prime now! This butterfly is nectaring on a Green-headed Coneflower.

Monarch nectaring on Joe-Pye Weed.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. As with this Red Clover, the purple and pink flowers seem to attract more than their fair share of butterflies these days. Yellows are popular, too, like the Green-headed Coneflower the Monarch is nectaring on earlier.
