Oatka Creek Park • August 7

Belted Kingfisher. This is one of the two kingfishers that have currently taken up residence along the creek in the park. The other one went flying off as I entered the area. This one gave brief rattling calls, but held its perch.

Belted Kingfisher. This is definitely one of the preferred hunting perches for these birds. (They have several along the creek.)

Painted Lady. It was nice to find this butterfly after their absence since the remarkable spring migration of Red Admirals and accompanying American and Painted Ladies. The field guide suggest August is the peak month for Painted Ladies, so maybe there will be many more sightings to come!
