Oatka Creek Park • March 4

Oatka Creek Park, Monroe, US-NY

Protocol: Traveling

Comments:     It was a snowy and windy 31F hike in Oatka today. It snowed the entire time, though the accumulation was very light. Bird activity was relatively high this morning with vocalizations prevalent, even if sightings were not. A Belted Kingfisher rattled with my approach to the bridge over the creek, but flew off the moment I made visual contact. A Carolina Wren sang in the distance further along the creek trail. A Golden-crowned Kinglet, scarce in the park of late, called from the deep shrubs of Warbler Loop. In addition to the swamp by the parking lot, I also heard a Red-winged Blackbird in the swamp by the railroad tracks. Finally, I had my second chipmunk sighting of the season, though before I could raise my camera, a dog walker with dogs came by and that was all the incentive the chipmunk needed to execute a strategic retreat!
