Comments:     It was a snowy 31F early morning birding hike in Oatka today. The entire walk was in persistent snow flurries that slowly turned the ground white, thought there was no significant accumulation. As usually happens, gloom and poor photographic conditions bring out the birds! Along Black Billed Cuckoo Trail a Pileated Woodpecker flew in and landed near me to have a breakfast of grapes. After that encounter, I moved further along the trail, still deep in the woods, and heard the approach of chickadees and then a single buzz. Not finding my quarry on any of the adjacent trees, I bushwhacked into the woods a bit to follow the chickadees. Then the Brown Creeper flew over my left shoulder and landed on a nearby tree in front of me. It worked that tree for a while and then flew over to a tree not even ten feet from me. It was actually a bad situation being so close photographically: low light producing long exposure times and bird movement appearing larger due to the close range equaled unavoidable motion blur. However, I was pleased to see the cinnamon of the margins of the rear scapulars quite clearly in the pictures, a field mark you just don't see every day! After those encounters things quieted down for the rest of the walk. A Downy Woodpecker did pop up onto a tree right in front of me at one point which produced a few pictures. Fishermen were in the creek, and while there was some success yesterday with catching small Brown Trouts, it appears the water is still too high and the current too strong to be of interest to the bird population at large.
