Comments:     It was a partially cloudy 41F early morning birding hike in Oatka today. It felt like a morning in late March or early April rather than early January. There were brief songs from titmice, nuthatches, White-throated Sparrows, and cardinals. However, the morning was overall a quiet one with small numbers of common winter residents. My best encounter was in the wooded section between large fields along Bluebird Trail where a Downy Woodpecker was busily excavating a smaller tree fairly close to the trail. It gave me a very nice photo-op for several minutes until some energetic dogs came running down the trail. The woodpecker watched them for a while then briefly resumed its excavations. Finally, it flew off, perhaps simply because it had finished its meal.
