Comments:     It was a mostly cloudy 21F hike in Oatka today. There was a bit of diffuse sun when I began my hike. As I walked down the dirt road from the parking lot to the woods, a flock of about fifty blackbirds flew overhead and low. Through binoculars the birds were nothing more than jet black silhouettes, emitting 'chacking' flight calls as they went. After reviewing my flight call library at home and from the shapes of the silhouettes, I was probably hearing Red-winged Blackbirds, though other blackbird species may have been mixed in. The woods were alive with woodpecker tapping in all directions until the sun was finally covered by the gathering clouds. As the light diminished, bird sightings became fleeting, though clear enough for comfortable IDs. Otherwise, I was left with watching the tracks of foxes in last night's snow, seeing where they changed gears from walking to running, and taking pictures of the deer coming out for one last round of daylight foraging.
