Comments:     It was a mostly overcast 40F early morning birding hike in Oatka today. The morning felt warm and the birds were very vocal with abbreviated songs from cardinals as well as robins, titmice, and chickadees.  Starlings and robins filled the airspace and a number of prominent perches throughout the park. Titmice could be heard everywhere, too, with 'Here! Here!' being their most common report. The Winter Wren toyed with me along the creek, circling me at one point, with a path maybe fifteen feet in diameter. It would pop up into the open on an exposed branch, 'dit-dit'ing while I desperately tried to bring my camera to bear, only to have it move the instant my finger was pressing the shutter button. This repeated three times before it completed the circle and left the area.  I took solace, however, when I ran into a vibrant mixed flock of birds about fifteen minutes later. Sensing such a flurry must include a Brown Creeper, I quickly found the creeper and got a few pictures before it moved on with the flock. Interestingly, the creeper moved *down* the trunk again a bit, though this time I realized it wanted to explore a large branch protruding from the trunk and that this was probably simply a mechanical necessity. Still, its moving silhouette momentarily took on the spitting image of a nuthatch as it repositioned itself.
