Comments:     It was a partially sunny 22F early morning birding hike in Oatka today. Cold but sunny conditions made today's walk more pleasant than one might have expected. Yesterday's slippery mud was frozen solid today, producing a loud crunch with each step that thwarted any attempt to move silently among the wildlife. While mapping out a new trail (for me) near the Union Street bridge and investigating the associated ruins, a Carolina Wren popped out of the stonework, gave me a few nervous looks and then took off. Investigations complete, my return trip down Trout Run Trail produced the first Winter Wren I've had in over a week. A Hermit Thrush called from the middle of Warbler Loop and woodpeckers were fairly numerous. A number of species were singing today (White-breasted Nuthatch, Tufted Titmouse, Black-capped Chickadee, American Robin, and White-throated Sparrow), though the songs were abbreviations of the spring versions.
