Oatka Creek Park, Monroe, US-NY

Comments: It was a rainy, gloomy, and windy 53F late morning birding hike in Oatka today. Bands of rain were moving through the area which delayed the start of the outing and doused me with raindrops from time to time. The weather and lateness of the morning seemed to keep the bird activity to a minimum with only roving bands of chickadees and titmice breaking the silence. Along Trout Run Trail by the creek there may have been an additional factor. As confirmed by their website http://www.gvc-adk.org/ , the local chapter of the Adirondack Club performed trail maintenance in the park yesterday. A lot of prime woodpecker habitat along the creekside was destroyed as a result with many old trees and snags being felled by chainsaw. On the drive home as I passed over the Stottle Road bridge over Black Creek, I saw a Great Blue Heron in the creek in full hunting mode, locked on something in the water in front of it. I chose to pass on monitoring its activities due to the road traffic in the area.
