Oatka Creek Park • October 30

Oatka Creek Park, Monroe, US-NY
Oct 30, 2011 7:56 AM - 10:43 AM
Protocol: Traveling
4.9 mile(s)
Comments:     It was a bright, sunny, and 30F sunrise birding hike in Oatka today. The 0.2 mile walk towards the woods netted 18 species, a mark the remainder of the 4.9 mile hike would fail to equal. From the masses of birds flying through the sky, last night's cold, clear weather decidedly triggered a migration event. A flock of 500+ blackbirds passed overhead, and though I played close attention, all I heard were chacks and no other tattletale vocalizations. So, how many were Red-wings, how many were Rusties, and how many were other I couldn't hazard a guess. The Rusty Blackbirds I saw yesterday appeared to have left overnight, as I found none today. On the upside, I had my first Fox Sparrow for the season. Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets were in attendance, as was a pair of Eastern Towhees. A quartet of Eastern Bluebirds flew overhead near Warbler Loop. They were probably a migration group for in previous years the overwintering contingent of bluebirds did not arrive until December. Perhaps inspired by Bob Marcotte's recent blog on Winter Wrens, I managed to get a picture of a Winter Wren down by the creek during one of those rare convergences of the bird pausing in clear view and my camera successfully focusing and taking the shot before the wren was off again.
