Comments:     It was a partially cloudy and 40F sunrise birding hike in Oatka today. I got fortunate, weather-wise, to arrive at the park just as the clouds parted and the morning sun began warming the area. As I walked down the dirt road from the parking lot to the woods the shrubs and trees vibrated with bird activity as everyone was starting their day with a meal and a warmup in the sunlight. Today was the largest influx of juncos in the park for the season with the first sizable group feeding along the edge of the road. Red-winged Blackbirds were singing from the cattails while Hermit Thushes called out as well. A towhee reacted to my passing from some unseen position in one of the shrubs. I had eighteen species on my list during this 0.2 mile walk leading to the woods. Warbler Loop greeted me with the calls of Sharp-shinned Hawks and I quickly found two sharpies perched on the far side of the loop. One quickly left its perch, but the other stayed for a nice photo-op. Both Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets were found along the Loop. The creek hosted a Great Blue Heron, a very *loud* and persistent Carolina Wren, and the prize of the day, a Blue-headed Vireo. I got field guide quality pictures of the latter. The fun was not over as I found a White-crowned Sparrow mixed in with a large mixed flock of White-throated Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos, and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, all along the field of Black Billed Cuckoo Trail. It was a great morning!
