Hamlin Beach and Braddock Bay • October 8

Hamlin Beach SP--Parking Lot #4 (Primary LakeWatch site), Monroe, US-NY
Oct 8, 2011 8:56 AM - 9:54 AM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments:     It was a sunny and 62F morning at the lake watch at Hamlin Beach with Bob and Sue Spahn, Sheryl Gracewski, and Tom Nash. There was a moderate number of birds on the smooth, calm water. The Red-breasted Mergansers may have outnumbered the gulls on the scene. Horned Grebes and Double-crested Cormorants also joined the feeding frenzies out on the water. Other usuals were seen or heard. Bob Spahn's list will be more complete than mine as I didn't always pick up on the more distant or fleeting birds.

Protocol: Traveling
1.3 mile(s)
Comments:     It was a sunny and 71F late morning birding hike along Yanty Creek Trail at Hamlin Beach with Bob and Sue Spahn, Sheryl Gracewski, and Tom Nash. The walk was a moderately birding one with lots of Hermit Thrushes, kinglets of both kinds, and a reasonable number of Winter Wrens and Pine Siskins. An immature Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was a treat near the end, as were the White-crowned Sparrows. Bob Spahn's list will be more complete than mine as I didn't always pick up on the more subtle or fleeting birds.

Braddock Bay WMA--Salmon Creek (Docksiders), Monroe, US-NY
Oct 8, 2011 11:58 AM - 12:34 PM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments:     It was a sunny at 77F noon hour at Docksiders on Braddock Bay with Bob and Sue Spahn, Sheryl Gracewski, and Tom Nash. The mudflat was very busy with a Black-bellied Plover and Wilson's Snipes among the multitude of Killdeer (my number is way low) and other sandpipers and plovers. At the edge of the cattails a Sora come out for great looks. At one point a Rough-legged Hawk put up a lot of gulls and Great Blue Herons and Wood Ducks helped to round out things. Bob Spahn's list will be more complete than mine as I need a lot more work on learning my shorebirds!
