Oatka Creek Park • May 24

It was a cloudy and 66F sunrise birding hike at Oatka today. This morning was the RBA field trip to the park. I decided to get to the park early to check out Brown Creeper Trail which is a bit out of the way and not part of the field trip. This trail has been an excellent location for migrant wood warblers, but the southerly winds last night seemed to have carried the vast majority of the migrants out of the park. I did find a Black-throated Green Warbler. The other thirty-four species I found are all probably park nesting species, though Ovenbird was not listed in the last NYS Bird Breeding Atlas for the park, so that bears more investigation. I returned to the parking lot at that point and joined up with the arriving field trip participants, led by Jay Greenberg and Ursula Kopp. We had an excellent field trip during which I picked up an additional twenty species including Chestnut-sided, Blackpoll, and Hooded Warblers, as well as several other mostly park nesters. The highlight was getting excellent looks at a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher sitting in her nest over the dirt road leading back to the parking lot. As I drove out of the parking lot and made my way around the perimeter of the park due to bridge rehabilitation on Union St., a Wild Turkey walked out to the edge of Stewart Road and watched me as I slowly drove by.
