Oatka Creek Park • May 20

It was a mostly sunny, breezy, and 67F late afternoon birding hike in Oatka today. The list makes the hike appear birdier than it seemed. I had two first-of-the-year birds for the park: Eastern Kingbird and Alder Flycatcher. Migrant warblers were in short supply with perhaps only a Magnolia Warbler to add to that category. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo called from some hidden perch in the distance and a Scarlet Tanager led me on a wild goose chase through the woods behind the lodge, "chick-burring" the whole time, but managing to stay out of sight. The trees now all seem to be in full foliage, so bird spotting just got a couple notches more difficult. :-) An Indigo Bunting was singing at the start of Bluebird Trail, but despite creeping onto the trail as carefully as I could, the bunting still stopping singing and flew off as I was just about to make visual contact. The male bluebird I've been watching by the nesting boxes for several weeks was kicking butt and taking names today as it chased off the nearby Tree Swallows with authority. The Eastern Kingbird didn't look like it wanted any part of the bluebird, either. Finally, Blue-winged Warblers seemed to be just about everywhere in the park today that there was a shrub.
