Oatka Creek Park • May 13

It was a partially sunny and breezy 83F late afternoon hike in Oatka today. It seemed like a slow day with not much bird activity, so the list I accumulated came as a bit of a surprise to me. :-) I had another Yellow-billed Cuckoo today and a Black-billed Cuckoo was calling at the same time from a different location. Choosing to search for the closer Yellow-billed (it was deep in the woods and generally inaccessible, however), I found a Scarlet Tanager instead for my best-ever photo-op of this bird. A pair of beautiful Bay-breasted Warblers were down by creekside, tussling over something or another. Actually, I also Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Yellow Warblers, and Blue-winged Warblers in dust-ups with other members of their species today. Sometimes it was over a female and sometimes it just seemed territorial. I saw a few female Yellow Warblers today; they've been largely absent before today. So, it was pretty good birding run after all!
