Oatka Creek Park • May 11

It was a sunny and 66F late afternoon birding hike in Oatka today. Variety was down a bit today, though there were definitely highlights! There were many Blue-winged Warblers and Baltimore Orioles in attendance today, along with more common species such as Yellow Warbler. The first great sighting was an extended encounter with a Scarlet Tanager in the woods of Black Billed Cuckoo Trail. Along Warbler Loop I had an outstanding photo-op with a Blue-winged Warbler. Shortly after that I heard a Black-throated Blue Warbler in the same section of woods I've heard one a few days ago. Over the creek three crows exploded into sight with a beleaguered Red-tailed Hawk in their midst, the latter trying to find a way out of the three-cornered assault. I came upon two separate cases of a pair of male orioles having a very loud and raucous disagreement, with neither bird willing to give ground. There was a lot of bluebird and Tree Swallow activity at the nesting boxes tonight. I wonder what is presently in their respective boxes? Usual suspects rounded out the remainder of the night.
