Oatka Creek Park • May 10

It was a cloudy, 62F late afternoon birding hike in Oatka today. It was an interesting birding run today with a number of warblers around again. First off as I left the parking lot, I heard, then saw White-crowned Sparrows. On the way back into the parking lot at the end of the hike they would still be there and would be particularly vocal. Along Brown Creeper Trail, I found a Yellow-rumped Warbler, a Yellow-throated Vireo (stilling getting good, if fleeting, views of this elusive bird!), Blue-winged Warblers, a *loud*, but extremely well hidden Ovenbird, a Great-crested Flycatcher, and gobs of White-throated Sparrows. :-) Entering Warbler Loop I was surprised to find a Chestnut-sided Warbler. Along Black Billed Cuckoo Trail near the entrance to Bluebird Trail, I had a pair of Purple Martins fly overhead and a Northern Parula in a tree top in front of me, complete with song. On the home stretch down the dirt road leading back to the parking lot, a pair of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers escorted me a good part of the way. Back at the parking lot, I glanced at the backyard thistle feeder and the Indigo Bunting was back sharing company with several goldfinches. Then, a House Wren flew up on the wooden picket fence and gave an entertaining concert as I took several pictures with this great photo-op!
