Mendon Ponds Park • December 23

Yesterday, Mary Flood and I went to Mendon Ponds Park to feed the birds before continuing on to Doran Road to watch the short-eared owls flying over the fields. There were plenty of chickadees that ate from our hands at Mendon, but precious little else. On the ground, the variety was a tiny bit better with cardinals, white-throated sparrows, titmice, and juncos. There were also a couple of downy woodpeckers in the trees. It was late in the day, so perhaps that had something to do with it. At Doran Road, we did see two or three owls a few minutes after sunset before it got too dark to see. I had hoped to get a few pictures, but will have to re-think my strategy due to the lack of light.
